Lesson: Lateral pentatonic motion
One thing that used to really amaze me when I saw people playing guitar was the ability to move up and down the length of the neck. This is called lateral movement. For players "stuck in the boxes", this kind of playing often seems out of reach.
Here are some licks that will get you moving up and down the neck. The first is a simple lick in A minor.

Notice that the second phrase is the same as the first. The fingering is just a little different because you are crossing onto the B string.
The third phrase starts the same way, but we run out of strings. In order to continue, we would have to climb up the E string, which would be OK but it is nice to break it up a little here and come back down instead.
